What NotebookLM and Study Junkie are each for
If you searched for NotebookLM and landed on Gemini Notebook, it is the same tool. Google renamed it on 2026-07-16 and kept it as a standalone product, now synced with the Gemini app. Google says more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organisations use it.
The two tools start from different jobs. Google describes NotebookLM as “an AI-powered research assistant designed to help you refine and organize your ideas.” You load a notebook with sources, ask questions across them, and generate overviews, mind maps, reports, flashcards and quizzes.
Study Junkie starts from one book or document and turns it into a course. It generates chapters from the full text and keeps the text intact, so nothing is summarized or shortened. Then you read or listen to each chapter, work problems drawn from it, and, if you switch it on, come back to it on a schedule. The steps are laid out in how Study Junkie works.
So the honest question is whether you are researching a topic or trying to learn a particular book.
Where NotebookLM is the better choice
NotebookLM wins on several things, and they are real.
It is free with high limits. The free tier gives you 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and 50 chats a day. Study Junkie’s free credits run out after a book outline and about two chapters of practice.
It shows its sources. Every chat answer carries inline citations. Hover and you see the quote; click and you jump to it in the source. Study Junkie’s tutor answers from your upload too, but it does not show citations in the interface. If checking each claim against the page matters to you, that is a clear point for NotebookLM.
It reads across many sources at once. Up to 50 per notebook on the free tier and 300 on Pro, from PDFs and ePubs to web pages, YouTube videos and audio. Study Junkie builds one course from one upload.
It makes more kinds of output. Audio and Video Overviews, mind maps, infographics, slide decks and reports, in more than 80 languages. Its flashcards and quizzes are quick to make and can be shared by link.
It has native apps for Android and iOS. Study Junkie runs in the browser on phones and tablets, with no app to install.
Where Study Junkie is the better choice
Study Junkie fits when you have one long book you mean to finish and remember. That use is narrower, and here it goes further than NotebookLM.
A path through the book. You get chapters built from the full text, in order. NotebookLM gives you artifacts about your sources rather than a sequence to work through. If you are wondering can NotebookLM turn a PDF into a course?, the short answer is no, and that post explains what it does make.
Narration of the book itself. Study Junkie reads the course chapters aloud at 0.75x to 2x speed. NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews are, in Google’s words, a conversation about your sources between AI hosts. Both are useful. They are different things.
Problems with feedback. Ask for problems on any chapter and Study Junkie writes them from your source. You write a solution and get AI feedback on it. Each problem has its own tutor chat that gives hints without handing over the answer. NotebookLM’s Learning Guide also asks open-ended questions in chat; the difference is a problem set tied to each chapter that you can return to.
A review schedule. Recall is off by default. Switch it on and a chapter comes back 1, 3 and 7 days after you finish it, and you can change the days. You answer open questions, reveal the answer and judge your own recall. Google’s help pages describe NotebookLM flashcards and quizzes that you start yourself, and no review schedule.
Pay once. NotebookLM’s higher limits come with a Google AI subscription, from $4.99 a month in the US. Study Junkie gives you 1,500 free credits after email verification, no card needed. That covers one book outline, one narrated chapter with problems and recall, and one more chapter with problems and recall. After that you buy one-time credit packs that never expire.
Can you use NotebookLM and Study Junkie together?
Yes, and for many self-learners it is a sensible split. Use NotebookLM to survey a subject: load the papers, articles and videos, ask questions with citations, and work out which book is worth your time. Then upload that book to Study Junkie and learn it chapter by chapter.
